Stories
We've been working around the clock to help our essential workers get to where they need to go via free bicycles donated by people like you. These are just a few of our heroes on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic risking their lives to care for us in hospitals, service us in grocery stores and keep our communities moving.

Your kindness and generosity is what makes our work possible.
Thank you for everything you're doing to make our cities healthier and safer for everyone.

Covid has not only increased the number of students needing mental health support but also the level of acuity which means that I find myself providing crisis intervention work on a daily basis. "Hello I am a Spanish teacher in a low income High School in Barrio Logan I live downtown. Every morning I put my bike in the bus #12 lock it in the school parking lot and ride back home. I ride 7 miles a day. My students at the beginning they laughed but now because I do it everyday they are changing their minds and think that it's not as crazy. Yesterday my bike was stolen, I don't have a bike anymore."

The delta variant puts me in a position where my need of a bicycle which was my primary form of transportation is even greater than it was. I've been approved for a series of Dr. appointments where the St. Charles Streetcar would be the most reasonable form of transport but this streetcar has packed people like sardines since the beginning of the pandemic and reporting this to RTA does no good. Also just as a lone female a bike dramatically decreases safety issues I have when walking"

I had to continue working this job in the middle of an outbreak on the campus while students had the choice to operate remotely. I usually walk most places close to me to avoid the daily cost and the possible crowds on public transit. A bike would help me get to work and run errands more efficiently and safely. It will also help provide me with stable transportation when I am hired to a full-time position."

A free bike would help me to get to work help me exercise and give me space to wind down after long days filled with difficult conversations with young people. With money tight it would help me a lot with self care to have a bike and not spend so much on gas."

Both of my bikes were stolen pre covid and one was returned thanks to Gerkins! However it does not fit me and has been hurting my body riding around during covid. I to go on long rides!"

I chose "Road" bike because I think lightweight makes the most sense for getting around the city quickly and carrying up my stairs into the apartment. Thank you for offering this!"

Because the school will be in a hybrid model, I want to commute to school via a bike and not take a public bus. Plus, the closest bus station from my location will be 15 minutes away on a walk. Thus, a bike will significantly help me commute to school. Thank you!"

"My family and I moved from Chicago to Sacramento for me to work as a Registered Nurse at Northern California VA Healthcare System. As a veteran, it is an honor to serve those who have served before me. My wife and I share one car and she is stranded at home with the kids the days that I work. Having a bike to be able to commute would be a blessing to my family and myself and would improve our quality of life."

"I am an essential worker but don’t feel comfortable riding on public transit during the pandemic. I can’t afford to drive in and park and with a bike I can ride to work from centre to Columbus and straight down Tremont. I’ve mapped it and tried it with an old unreliable folding bike that took more effort to ride than possible on a commute. I need a good commuting bike, preferably one that also can accommodate a toddler seat to do daycare drop offs on the way in when that’s possible again. "

"I work as a case manager with Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. Currently I work at Covid positivie isolation and quarantine spaces (tents and convention center) for folks who do not have a place of their own to isolate. Currently I am walking up to an hour and a half each way to get to work and protect my community and myself."

"I work at the Cambridge Hospital where I run outpatient mental health services for children. I still go into the hospital during the week to conduct televisits with my patients and help coordinate our services. We have two small kids at home and it helps to leave our one car with my wife so she can take the kids out for activity. Having a bike will help with my commute to the hospital (~25min walk currently) and give me some much needed exercise to/from the hospital. I appreciate what you're doing here! Nick Carson"

"I’m a Critical Care Nurse working in the COVID ICU at Kaiser. I’ve been working nearly every day during the pandemic. I do not have a car so I was dependent on Muni & Uber/Lyft. The cuts to Muni service have directly affected me as my Bus line is not running anymore. I’m also hesitant to use Uber/Lyft due to the sheer volume of passengers going in and out of the limited number of available vehicles. I am taking extra precautions because I have severe asthma and if infected with COVID I’m at high risk for severe complications."

"It will help me exercise and loose weight as well as get to work without worrying about parking. I will also be saving the planet. A cruiser is preferred with a basket and bell. So that I may carry my stethoscope and PPE. The bell will be helpful to alert those in the crosswalk of my arrival. I would also like a light so I can utilize it for my night rides home from my PM shift. "

"I work as an emergency doctor at Boston Medical Center and commute from Cambridge. My usual commute has been a combination of biking, running or riding the Number 1 bus. However, I am no longer riding the bus to decrease transmission risk (mostly from me to others). I had biked to work last night and while I was working hard, someone stole both my front wheel and back hub, making my bike completely unridable. I would love to have a bike so that I can continue to commute in this safe and sustainable way. Or, if you are able to help with scavenging parts and rebuilding mine, that help would also be very welcome and would get me back on wheels. (It's a Diamondback Haanjo Metro 2017 and missing front wheel w/ disc and back hub w/ disc mount. Otherwise it is in solid condition. I just don't have the bandwidth and time to figure out and repair right now.) Thank you for everything you're doing and please let me know if you or a partner is able to help. I've been mostly focused on bike safety advocacy (making yesterday an especially shitty day at BMC) but appreciate all of your ongoing work getting bikes and skills into hands of good folks. Thanks."

"Hi there! I'm a medical student working at SF General Hospital, and with the reductions in MUNI lines and UCSF shuttles, it would be great to have a bike to commute from my house in the Inner Sunset to the Mission. So far, I've been relying on rides from my colleagues going to work, Lyft bikes, or if the timing works out, the limited-running UCSF shuttles. Currently volunteering on an initiative to help patients connect with their loved ones through tablets visits, that we are piloting now, and hopefully will expand in size (even post-Covid era). This project has been so heartwarming and an honor to be a part of. It would be really great to have a reliable mode of transportation to the hospital (and also make room for exercise too, which I often struggle to find daylight hours to do)"

"I volunteer in a COVID-19 testing lab at the BioHub 3-4 days per week, which is about 2 miles away. I normally bike to the lab, but unfortunately my bike was stolen this week. A free bike would give me a quick and safe way to get to the lab, as my shift often ends late at night."
